Fence, Gate and Stair Repairs in Greater Victoria: Recent Jobs on Jacks
By Jacks, 2026-10-26
You've got a gate that won't close, a fence panel leaning into the neighbour's yard, or a front step going soft. It's a few hours of work at most. That's what makes it hard to get done. A two-board repair is too small for a lot of contractors to fit in, and it's too much for you to fix with a drill and a free Saturday.
The homeowners below, from Colwood to Sidney, were in that spot this summer and fall. They posted the job on Jacks, picked a local carpenter in Victoria from the Jacks who applied, and wrote a review once the work was done. Here's what broke, who fixed it, and how it went, in their own words.
Quick answer
Post your fence, gate or stair repair on Jacks with a photo and a few details. Local carpenters and handymen apply with a quote, often within the hour. You read their profiles and reviews, then hire the one you want. You can also skip the post and book a Jack directly from their profile.

Two broken gates in Fairfield, fixed the next day
- The problem: two gates at Carolyn's place. "One has been knocked out of alignment and the other has dropped making both very difficult to use."
- The post: a Wednesday afternoon, with three photos.
- The response: Trevor Stephenson applied eight minutes later. Trevor runs TS Construction and has more than 25 years of carpentry behind him.
- Done: Thursday.
"Trevor was able to make my very broken gates function like new! He was kind, efficient and communicative …thank you, Trevor!"
While he was there, Carolyn had him take out an old glass shower enclosure in a rental suite she was refurbishing. "Thank you for doing a wonderful job!" she wrote about that one.
New front stairs in Saanichton, with the neighbours watching
- The problem: Graeme's front stairs needed replacing.
- The post: a Sunday afternoon, with a photo of the old stairs.
- The response: the first Jack applied within five minutes, and four applied in total. Graeme hired Rob Sutherland, who runs Anchorline Home Services and has more than eight years around the trades.
"From initial contact to job completion a few days ago, Rob was professional, attentive and skilled all the way. Looking forward to having him back in the Spring for a smaller project. 2 neighbours have jobs for him as well, and I'll do my best to add to that list. If you're looking for someone for your project, contact Rob. You won't be disappointed."
A good tradesperson finding more work on the same street is how this is supposed to go.
New fence posts in Brentwood Bay
- The problem: Jillian needed two new wooden fence posts and a repair on the fence itself.
- The post: a Saturday night. She had the supplies ready.
- The response: Sidney Woodrow applied the next morning. Sidney has more than 10 years of carpentry experience and works with a partner who has more than 25.
- Done: the following Wednesday.
"Knowledgeable, efficient and great communication. Thank you Sidney for fixing our fence!"
Rotting front-door boards in Esquimalt
- The problem: two boards on the walkway to Hugh's front door had started to rot. They needed replacing and painting to match the stairs.
- Who he hired: Trevor, for the second time. In August, Trevor put a grab bar in Hugh's bathroom. "Trevor's work will make my life better… safer," Hugh wrote then.
Hugh went out for the day and came home to a finished job:
"Trevor is amazing! He did magic! I left in the morning and returned to the job done. Looks great and we know all the unseen elements (supports and beams) done with care and professional attention."
The next day was a Sunday, and Trevor came back to haul away the offcuts and old boards. "On a Sunday he is thinking about tidying up! That's impressive."
Staining new cedar stairs in Gordon Head
- The problem: Marie had a new set of cedar stairs running from her sunroom down to the back yard. "I hope to get them stained before the weather gets too wet," she wrote.
- The response: she posted on a Tuesday afternoon. The first Jack applied within 12 minutes, and four applied in all.
- Who she hired: Kyle Vaughn, a Victoria painter who does interiors, exteriors, trim and wood. His profile puts it this way: "most of what you're paying for on a paint job is already finished before the first coat goes on."
"Kyle was friendly, conscientious, and did a great job on my cedar stairs."
50 feet of new fence in Sidney
- The problem: Coleen needed about 50 feet of fence put in, posts set in concrete.
- The post: she already had the materials, so she asked for labour only.
- The response: three Jacks applied, Rob among them the same day, and she hired him.
"We hired Rob to build a fence. He was prompt, polite and professional. We will contact him any future projects."

Deck railings and steps near Hillside Mall
- The problem: the railings and steps on Judy's wood decks needed repair.
- The post: a short description and two photos. Two Jacks applied.
- Who she hired: Matt LePage, a recent UVic graduate who works as a carpenter's helper.
"Matt did a great job on the deck. He was professional and hard working. I was very pleased with the job from start to finish."
Later that summer, when Judy was ready to finish the railings on her bedroom deck, her job post asked for Matt by name.
A new deck railing in Colwood
Brian needed 15 feet of aluminum deck railing supplied and installed, and he hired Matt too. He didn't need to stand over him:
"Matt did a really great job! Unsupervised, and without any assistance, he just got on with the job. Unlike many contractors these days, he arrived when he said he would. A definite keeper: thanks Matt."
What these homeowners did that worked
Look back at the posts above and a few habits stand out. They're worth copying if you're about to post your own repair.
| What they did | Why it helped |
|---|---|
| Added photos | Carolyn posted three photos. Trevor applied eight minutes later, and her gates were fixed the next day. |
| Gave the size | Coleen said about 50 feet, posts in concrete. Jacks could quote without guessing. |
| Described the problem | Carolyn said one gate was knocked out of alignment and the other had dropped. Hugh said which boards were rotting. |
| Said who supplies materials | Coleen and Jillian already had theirs, so quotes covered labour only. |
| Said when they needed it | Marie wanted her stairs stained before the wet weather. Jacks knew the timeline up front. |
| Bundled small jobs | Judy put the railings and steps for her decks in one post. One visit, one hire. |
Why they could hire with confidence
Each homeowner here knew who they were hiring before saying yes. On Jacks you can see:
- Their experience. Every Jack writes their own profile. Trevor lists 25+ years of carpentry, Sidney 10+, Rob runs Anchorline Home Services, and Kyle explains how he preps a paint job.
- Their reviews. Every quote in this post is on a Jack's profile, written by the homeowner after the job was done.
- Their insurance. Jacks with a current policy on file show an Insured badge.
- Who else applied. When four Jacks apply to your job, you compare them side by side and pick one.
Every Jack in this post is an independent tradesperson. They set their own prices and choose which jobs to take. For more on picking the right person, read our guide on who to trust when hiring a tradesperson in Victoria.
Quick FAQ
Can I hire someone for just one fence panel or one step?
Yes. Several of the jobs above were that size. Add a photo and Jacks can quote it accurately.
How fast will someone apply?
It depends on the job and the week. On several of the jobs above, the first Jack applied within 15 minutes.
Can I supply my own materials?
Yes. Coleen and Jillian both had their fence materials and hired for labour only. Say so in your post.
Can I hire the same Jack again?
Yes. Book them directly from their profile. Hugh went back to Trevor after his grab bar install, and Judy asked for Matt by name on her next deck job.
Should I fix a loose fence or gate before winter?
Yes, if a post is loose or a board is rotting. Wind finds the weak spot first. Our winter home prep checklist covers fences and gates along with the rest of the house.
Does it cost anything to post a job?
No. Posting and hiring are free for homeowners.
